High Specific Surface Area: The MBBR biofilm medium is made of polyethylene (PE) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a honeycomb or mesh structure on its surface, significantly increasing the surface area for microbial attachment. This structure allows a unit volume of medium to hold more microorganisms, thereby improving pollutant degradation efficiency.
Suspension Motion Characteristics: The medium’s density is close to that of water, allowing it to remain freely suspended within the reactor under aeration or water flow. This motion promotes full contact between the medium and wastewater, while collisions and shear forces refine the bubbles, improving oxygen utilization.
Layered Biofilm Structure: Each medium layer creates an anaerobic/facultative environment within and an aerobic environment on the outside, forming a microreactor. This structure allows nitrification and denitrification processes to occur simultaneously, significantly improving nitrogen removal efficiency.

Increased Microbial Concentration: The amount of microorganisms that a unit volume of medium can support is 3-5 times that of the traditional activated sludge process, resulting in faster pollutant degradation.
Strong Resistance to Shock Loads: The biofilm structure buffers water quality fluctuations, ensuring effluent stability.
Compact Design: The MBBR system eliminates the need for a secondary sedimentation tank, reducing reactor volume by 30%-50% and minimizing land occupation.
Modular Expansion: The amount of medium added can be increased or decreased according to treatment needs, flexibly adapting to projects of different scales.
Reduced Energy Consumption: Suspended motion reduces the need for agitation equipment, optimizing aeration by 20%-30%.
Low Sludge Production: The long biofilm shedding cycle reduces residual sludge by 15%-25% compared to traditional processes.
Easy Maintenance: The medium has a lifespan of over 10 years, eliminating the need for frequent replacements; only periodic backwashing is required.
